To win/won/won=thắng, được. To lose/lost/lost.=thua, mất. Gary nói: Try to understand what the other side needs.=Gắng tìm hiểu phe bên kia cần gì. Find out everything that you can about the company.=Hãy cố gắng tìm kiếm tin tức liên quan đến hãng đó. Get to know the people in the company.=Tìm hiểu, làm quen với nhân viên hãng đó. Arrive early at meetings to chat about personal matters.= Ðến họp sớm, để có thì giờ nói chuyện về những vấn đề cá nhân. Small talk is important because it helps build trust.=Nói chuyện qua loa ban đầu (cuộc họp) là điều quan trọng vì giúp gây tín nhiệm. To socialize with someone=giao thiệp với người nào. Vietnamese Explanation

Trong phần tới ta nghe những câu diễn tả một điều lo ngại, quan tâm, how to express a concern. That has me really worried=điều ấy làm tôi thực lo ngại. Tương tự, Competition worries me. I’m especially concerned about competition. Competition is definitely my concern, tôi lo ngại vì có cạnh tranh. Dùng “I’m just not sure that…” để diễn tả một điều ta bất đồng ý một cách lịch sự. Thay vì nói: “This is not the right time to invest in a fast food company,” bây giờ không phải là lúc thuận tiện để đầu tư vào công ty bán đồ ăn liền, thì Sophia nói: “I’m just not sure that this the right time to invest in a fast food company.” Tương tự, thay vì nói: “That’s not a good idea,” đó không phải là một ý hay, ta nói: “I’m just not sure that’s a good idea.” Hay là: “I’m not so sure that’s a good idea.” Tóm lại, khi diễn tả sự nghi ngờ (doubts), ta dùng những câu như: I’m just not sure…I’m not so sure that… hay I’m not sure about that.

Vietnamese Explanation

Trong phần Mách giúp Văn hoá, Culture Tip, Gary chỉ cho ta cách diễn tả sự quan tâm, và cách diễn tả sự hoài nghi--how to express your concerns, and doubts. Khi thấy những con số chứng tỏ mức phân phối thị trường của hãng Burger Town đã giảm trong ba năm qua, Sophia lo ngại về sự gia tăng cạnh tranh của các công ty khác. Thomas nói: According to these figures, the market share of Burger Town has declined twenty percent during the last three years.=theo những con số này thì thị phân của hãng Burger Town đã giảm 20% trong ba năm qua. Sophia nói: Competition has me really worried.=Tôi lo ngại về sự cạnh tranh. Có thể nói bằng những cách khác cùng một ý như: I’m especially worried about increasing competition from other fast food restaurants. Và để diễn tả sự hoài nghi về việc có nên đầu tư hay không, cô nói: I’m just not sure that this is the right time to invest in a fast food company. To work towards a solution.=cùng nhau tìm ra giải pháp. Toward(s)=về phía, hướng về. Quí vị còn nhớ chữ gì chỉ tỉ lệ phần trăm trên toàn thị trường của một sản phẩm của một công ty? –Ðó là chữ “market share.” Xin nghe và trả lời bằng tiếng Anh: If the market share of a company is declining, is the company doing well or poorly? –Poorly. Xin nghe đoạn cuối.

UPBEAT MUSIC

Eliz: Now it’s time for Gary’s Tips with Gary Engleton!

Gary: Hello, Elizabeth! Today I’ll be talking about how to express concerns.

In today’s Business Dialog, Sophia and Thomas both have concerns about Burger Town.

Notice their use of the expressions “That has me really worried” and “I’m especially concerned...”

Thomas: According to these figures, the market share of Burger Town has declined twenty percent during the last three years.

Sophia: Yes, that has me really worried.

It is clear that competition is increasing.

I’m especially concerned about competition from other types of fast food restaurants.

Gary: Later, Sophia expresses her doubts with the words “I’m just not sure that this is the right time...”

Sophia: I’m just not sure that this is the right time to invest in a fast food company.

Gary: Mr. Gomez also expresses his concerns when he talks to Mr. Blake about the service manual.

Gomez:  Uh, another one of our major concerns is the service manual.

We’re quite concerned about getting a service manual in English.

It has to be easy to read and very clear and useful for our engineers.

Gary: One important part of any negotiation is to bring up your concerns and to understand the other person’s concerns.

In this way, you can work towards a solution that will work well for both sides of the negotiation.

Thanks for joining us today for Gary’s Tips. We’ll see you again next time!

Eliz: Thanks, Gary!

Eliz: Well, our time is up. Tune in again next time for Functioning in Business. See you then!
