Nicholas Teo is trying to get rid of his boy-next-door image through this album. He has tried and attempted new styles, but not completely off his image. For those who have always been into his ballads, it still takes up a major part of this album so no worries, and for those who have been looking for new things, there are a few tracks which may keep you exicted.
Nicholas Teo - Only Nicholas

This is his third album following his last extremely successful album (nb. Jessy has already written a review for this). In my opinion at only 25 years of age (birthday: 29th November 1981) he’s done pretty well for himself and is starting to develop into a well known celebrity!
The songs in this album in my opinion are quite similar to his last and has a ‘guang liang’ feel to it. Most of the album consists of slow ballads and fairly upbeat pop songs.
The album starts off with the songs 只因为你- zhi yin wei ni (because of you) is quite a poppy song but upbeat along with the songs 明白- ming bai (understood) and 那一年- na yi nian (that year), 忘记爱过- wang ji ai guo (forgotten that I’ve loved before)
The ballad songs are as follows: 痛彻心扉 (a wound in the heart), 将错就错- jiang cuo jiu cuo (mistake), Your heart my heart, 日日夜夜- ri ri ye ye (day and night), 不想离开- bu xiang li kai (don’t want to leave), 挣扎 (struggle). The lyrics to 挣扎 was written by Nicholas himself and though it’s quite similar to some of his other ballads it’s good to see that Nicholas is finally starting to write his own lyrics. I think that when he starts to write more of his own music he’ll start to develop into a more credited artist and eventually his own style of music.
The song 爸爸妈妈- ba ba ma ma (dad and mum) is a very sweet song and though not written by him you can still hear the sincerity in his voice when he sings this song. It is quite obvious that this song is dedicated for his parents and I particularly like the lyrics:
生活的压力 真大
Shen huo de ya li zhen de da
Life exerts great pressure on our lives
爸爸妈妈多苦也撑起了一个家
Ba ba ma ma duo ku ye cheng qi le yi ge jia
No matter what difficulties life brings to mum and dad they are still able to support a family
This may be related to his newly found fame and how he is happy that his parents will always be behind him 100%
All in all this album is a pretty good 3rd album from him and I am definitely looking forward to seeing more of him!

Nicholas Teo - Shou Zhang Tong Ming Zhuan Ji (Debut Album)

Releasing his first EP after winning the title of Astro Talent Quest champion, Nicholas Teo has been venturing into overseas market over the past two years. From Malaysian to Singapore to Mainland China, Nicholas finally made it in the competitive Taiwanese market. The ex-student in Taiwan had been taking part in several singing contest during his university years. This album, which is well-received by Taiwanese fans, is a dream come true for him.
This album was actually released in Malaysia in 2004, titled “首选” (First Choice). In this Taiwan-released album “首张同名专辑 (Only One限量加值版) Shou Zhang Tong Ming Zhuang Ji (Only One Limited Edition)”, there are 2 new songs “Dream” and “藏爱 Cang Ai” and also an added introduction. You can hear that Nicholas’s voice sounds more mature in these 2 songs. His singing style also changed a little.
The songs in the album are quite consistent. Ranging from slow sad songs to middle-beat songs, they don’t vary a lot. However, Nicholas’s voice is clean, and clear, like a cup of distilled water. He doesn’t need to do the R&B styled ad-libs like Z Chen, neither does he need to be very emotional like Jacky Cheung. He simply sings his heart out, naturally, and that sounds good!
“当你孤单你会想起谁 Dang Ni Gu Dan Ni Hui Xiang Qi Shui” is already a hit in many karaoke charts. The simple and easy-singing melody and straight-forward lyrics are most favored by karaoke goers, especially teens and students. “寂寞边界 Ji Mo Bian Jie” is written by a famous Taiwanese producer, 周传雄 Zhou Chuan Xiong, or better known as 小刚 Xiao Gang. He decided to write a song for this newcomer after Nicholas popularized his song “黄昏 Huang Hun”, which Nicholas made it his winning song in the final of the singing competition. Besides, “Only One” is a cover of Japanese boy band, SMAP’s song.
The album also consists of 3 songs which are originally in his first EP; “付出 Fu Chu”, “重伤 Zhong Shang” and “黄昏 Huang Hun”. The producer is really utilizing the disc space to the fullest. The album also comes with a bonus AVCD with 3 music videos and and 5 remix songs.
Overall, this album is well done but lack of surprise. Hopefully we can see Nicholas singing a variety of different genres in his next album.
