Why the Monsoon Comes Each Year -- Son Tinh Thuy Tinh
Princess Mi Nuong was said. A servant combed her shiny black hair and helped her with her beautiful dress. The servant held up a mirror, but Mi Nuong pushed it away. The princess didn't want to see the small new wrinkle between her eyes. She was getting old, and she didn't have a husband.
Many men wanted to marry the princess. Some were handsome. Many came from other lands. But the emperor did not want his daughter to marry any of them. He wanted her to marry someone rich and powerful. Many years passed, and the princess thought she would never marry.
One day two strangers came to the emperor. Both were wich and powerful. One was the sea god. The other was the mountain god. The emperor told them to come the next day with wedding gifts. The one that arrived first would marry the princess.
The sea god hurried to his men. He told them to look for perfect pearls and delicious sea food. The mountain god climbed to the highest mountain. He told his men to find diamonds and emeralds. He also told them to fill baskets with special fruits that did not grow in the emperor's land.
The men quickly found the diamonds, emeralds, and fruit. The mountain god hurried down the mountain with the gifts. He arrived at the palace very early in the morning. The emperor was happy with the gifts. Mi Nuong and the mountain god married. The emperor promised to visit his daughter in her new home.
A fer minutes later the sea god arrived with his gifts. He saw Mi Nuong leaving the palace with the mountain god. He was very angry. He thought the mountain god used some trick to arrive first.
The sea god told his men to follow the mountain god and take Mi Nuong from him. A strong wind began to blow. Rain fell, and the sea waves got higher and higher. Water came on the land. People had to run away from the sea and the rivers. The water washed away houses and large cities.
The water went up to the foot of the mountain. But the sea god could not catch Mi Nuong. The mountain god told his men to throw trees and big rocks down on the sea god and his men.
They fought for many days. The people prayed for them to stop. Many people died in the high water.
Finally the sea god stopped fighting. He could not take the princess from the mountain god. He and his men went back to the sea. He took the high water with him.
But the sea god didn't stop being angry. Every year he tries to take the princess from the mountain god. He sends strong winds and high water onto the land. Every year he comes to the mountain where Mi Nuong lives with his husband. The mountain god pushes him back into the sea. That is why the monsoon comes to Vietnam every year.
