Have you ever done something smoothly? I have never received anything I wanted for the first time. Receiving my driver's license was one of my successes that I had passed many difficulties through the whole process of learning, practicing, and taking the driving test.

Sitting in a car and looking at the outside views through the windows, I wanted to be a careful driver. Therefore, learning how to drive a car was one of my first strategies that I planned when I came to the United States. To have the driver’s license I had gone step by step. First, I came to DMV to register for the written exam. Then, I studied to pass the written test and received a valid learner’s permit. Next, with the permit I was taught how to drive and control the car. Finally, I made appointment to take the driving test. After I passed the driving test I received my driver’s license. It took me about ten months that I challenged with driving lessons through the whole process.

The first step was registering for the written exam. My brother took me to the DMV to fill out an application, and I paid twenty-one dollars for the fee. My brother helped me to fill out all the information needed. I was given a book containing all the information about driving laws. I studied carefully the whole book. After a month learning for written exam, I finally took the test and passed it, missing six questions. I received the valid learner’s permit. My father and my brother were now ready to be my driving teachers.

In the early mornings in my first winter in the United States, I was taught basic steps of driving a car. On the first days, my father let me practice on small streets in my neighborhood. I was extremely scared holding the steering-wheel, especially when there was another car passing mine. Sometimes I could not control the car; I drove on the curbs and hit the grass many times. While I was learning how to drive correctly, my father constantly reminded me about the laws of driving. Later on, I experimented on big streets such as Hammer Lane and West Lane. My brother showed me how to make the U-turn, back up, and park the car safely. Because I was timid and not ready to take the driving test, my father and my brother continuously help me practice more and more.

After five months, it was time to take the big test. My brother called the DMV to make a driving appointment. On the testing day, I was still nervous while sitting in the car and waiting for the instructor. When the instructor showed up, he tested me by checking my use of the car lights, horn, brakes, and windscreen wipers. Then, he tested my hand signals. I passed the first steps. After that, I slowly drove off the DMV’s campus. I tried to keep the speed between twenty-two and twenty-three miles. After ten minutes of driving, the instructor let me return to the DMV, I failed the first time. The mistake was I did not follow his directions when I made the left turn at the traffic light. To prepare for the next time, my father took me to the DMV, to let me make acquaintance with the streets and traffic lights. When I was ready, I made another appointment to take the test. Unfortunately, I failed the test the second and the third time with the same mistake and the same instructor. “Is the instructor was so strict?” I thought. I lost five dollars for each time when I retook the test.

The first valid learner’s permit was expired; I had to pay twenty-one dollars for the fee to retake the written exam. I passed the test and made another appointment to take the driving test for the fourth time. This time, I drove for a long time around downtown with a different instructor, and I believed that I could pass the driving test. Unluckily, I hit the curb when I parked the car in the parking lot. Therefore, I failed the test again. I felt awful and stopped taking the test for 3 months. However, I did not give up. On Aug 16, 2006, I came back to the DMV to take the test the fifth time, and I passed the test easily. Finally, I received my diver’s license.

Receiving my driver’s license was the first success I had in the United States. In the past twenty-four years, I have never done anything smoothly; I was always in difficult problems before I accomplished the things I wanted. To earn the driver’s license, I had passed many difficulties through the whole process of learning, practicing, and taking the driving test. I think that “I have a dream” said by Martin Luther king was right, and I did not give up on becoming a licensed driver.

Wow! quá dữ. It seems every step you went, every essay written. If you were a gentlemen, I would say "văn võ song toàn", but you are a lady, so I say "tài sắc vẹn toàn" how that sound lady? Oh! Come on! Don’t be modest ! As I learned, but I am not sure, people usually feel their cars are bigger than streets when driving the first time, is it right? A fact, I really enjoy your writing. By reading your journals, I am exploring the wonderful world where someone is so easy, sincere and patient. I know life is a beautiful road and want to get on to reach a destination is not easy. Sometimes we have to try hard and harder. Who says the 100th shot on the right target is not the result of 99 times shot out? Of course, not me. I expect to read more from you.
You have a great weekend.
Good luck,

Song Kien
